Gastroenterologists and primary care physicians in Northwest Indiana now have access to a unique resource for their patients with liver disease or complications from cirrhosis. The University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) has opened the Hepatology & Liver Transplant Clinic at 222 Indianapolis Boulevard in Schererville, led by Helen S. Te, MD.

Dr. Te, associate professor of medicine and medical director of UCM’s Adult Liver Transplant Program, provides consultation on abnormal liver tests, hepatitis, fatty liver diseases, autoimmune liver diseases, cirrhosis, liver cancers and liver transplants. “Offering this expertise at a clinic in your patients’ backyard provides both convenience and a tremendous benefit in the management of their liver disease,” Dr. Te said.

When Dr. Te determines that more complex testing or specialized intervention is required, a follow-up visit can be scheduled at the Hyde Park campus. “For any patient who would benefit from a multidisciplinary approach, we bring together a team of expert hematologists, surgeons, radiologists and pathologists to develop an individualized treatment plan,” Te said. “We also communicate directly and regularly with the referring physician on the patient’s plan and progress.”

The Hepatology and Liver Transplant Clinic is open two Wednesdays per month from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Appointments are usually available within one to two weeks. Referring physicians can call Dr. Te directly at 773-834-8916 or GI Physician Connect at 1-844-824-4362 for referral assistance, urgent patient transfers, or consultations. Patient appointments may be made by calling 773-702-6140 and specifying the Schererville location.
