After a one-year fellowship at the University of Chicago Medicine, Lisa Marie Cannon, MD, has joined the new Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery under Chief Neil H. Hyman, MD.

Originally from Washington state and then South Dakota, Dr. Cannon attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and complete her internship and residency at New York Presybterian-Columbia University Medical School. She was attracted to UChicago Medicine for the fellowship in colon and rectal surgery, which featured a unique partnership with Northwestern University and NorthShore Medical Center.

“I enjoyed working in various parts of the city and gaining experience with colorectal patients from all walks of life,” she said.

Dr. Cannon has a special interest in minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques and the use of enhanced recovery pathways to reduce post-operative pain and shorten recovery time. She believes in building strong relationships and good communication with both referring physicians and patients to help patients achieve the best quality of life.

“Being present with the colorectal patient and really listening to him or her throughout the diagnostic process is key to developing a compassionate, comprehensive treatment plan,” she says. “It also is important to share information regularly with the referring physician so we can be effective partners in the patient’s ongoing care.”
