Leading expert on colon and rectal surgery joins UCM

Neil Hyman, MD, FACS, joins UCM to lead new section of colon and rectal surgery. He has been named to the "Best Doctors in America" and "America's Top Doctors for Cancer" lists annually since 2009.

After nearly three decades at the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine, first as a medical student and most recently as professor of colorectal surgery and co-director of the Digestive Disease Center, Neil Hyman, MD, FACS, has joined the University of Chicago Medicine as professor of surgery and chief of the new section of colon and rectal surgery.

Known for his collaborative approach, Dr. Hyman is excited to partner with other physicians and the community to advance the world-class program in colorectal surgery at UCM.

"The University of Chicago Medicine has a storied tradition of excellence in gastrointestinal surgery. Now we hope to build on our reputation as a national leader in colorectal surgery through our outreach efforts," Dr. Hyman said. 

Dr. Hyman specializes in the treatment of a wide variety of colon and rectal cancers, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) and complex colorectal problems. Dr. Hyman has strong clinical and research interests in innovative surgical techniques and approaches in the management of colorectal disease.

A prolific author, Dr. Hyman has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, the vast majority of which he is listed as the first faculty or senior author. He has been invited to speak more than 240 times throughout his career. Dr. Hyman has been named Teacher of the Year three times  at the UVM College of Medicine, and in 2014, received the Distinguished Academic Achievement Award from the college's Alumni Association. He was named Physician of the Year in 2010-11 by the Vermont State Medical Society, and has been named to the "Best Doctors in America" and "America's Top Doctors for Cancer" lists annually since 2009. Dr. Hyman is currently active in nine professional associations, including the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons, the New England Surgical Society and the American Board of Surgery.
